Wagon Travels

Kandy is Sri Lanka’s last royal capital and its cultural heart – and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the most venerated Buddhist shrine in the world outside the island itself. The puja ceremony, when the inner shrine opens to candlelight and the sound of drums fills the gilded chambers, is an experience of remarkable atmosphere and genuine spiritual weight. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya – 147 acres of curated tropical landscape with one of Asia’s finest orchid collections, the famous giant Java fig canopy and a royal palm avenue that stretches almost beyond sight – give the day its most expansive and beautiful hour. An optional evening Kandyan cultural dance performance closes it theatrically, with elaborate costuming, fire sequences and the complex percussion of the full traditional ensemble.
