Sri Lanka’s undisputed white water rafting capital – the Kelani Ganga runs Grade 3 – 4 rapids through a rainforest gorge that scholars of cinema history will recognise as the principal setting for David Lean’s 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai (the original railway bridge supports are still visible in the river). Approximately 12km of river, a sequence of named rapids with recovery stretches between them, certified operators with safety kayakers on the water and helmets and life jackets provided. The surrounding rainforest is one of the finest endemic birding locations on the island.
