The high-altitude plateau at 2,100 metres is Sri Lanka’s rooftop – a protected national park of montane cloud forest and open grassland that ends abruptly at World’s End, a sheer 870-metre escarpment revealing the full southern arc of the island on a clear morning. The 9km circular trail passes through a landscape of extraordinary stillness, with purple-faced langurs in the cloud forest, sambar deer on the open moorland and Baker’s Falls on the return route. Cloud typically covers the escarpment by eleven in the morning – the pre-dawn drive from Nuwara Eliya is essential.
